The Millers are one victory away from making state, and it’s a doozey of a match against the undefeated and second-ranked Wayzata Trojans. The boys play at 5:00pm at Wayzata High School. The girls follow with a rematch of last year’s Section 6AA final at 7:00pm.
In a rematch of last year’s 6AA section semifinal, the Trojans will be looking for redemption, as Washburn came away with a 2-1 victory on Wayzata’s home field last year. And two 2016 Mr. Soccer nominees will be on the field—the Millers’ Juan Louis and the Trojans’ Tyler Stevens.
Wayzata is ranked second in the Class AA coaches’ poll and ended the regular season undefeated at 13-0-3, with two wins each over Edina and Minnetonka. Wayzata’s three draws came against Bloomington Jefferson (0-0), Eden Prairie (1-1), and East Ridge (1-1). In regular season matches against teams Washburn has played this season the Trojans are 6-0-1, twice shutting out Edina (2-0 each time) and Hopkins (6-0 and 5-0). In their section semifinal match, however, the Trojans gave up two goals against Minneapolis South, pulling out a 4-2 victory at home.
The Millers are currently 12-5-0 and coming off section playoff wins over Robbinsdale Cooper and Hopkins. They were unranked in the last coaches poll of the season and moved up to 17th in Class AA in the Minnesota Scores/QRF rankings after section playoff matches. Wayzata is the current Lake Conference Champion, while Washburn is the current Minneapolis City Conference champion.
